Here are some tips on how to care for your glasses to keep them functioning as well as possible and to extend their lives.

Cleaning:

Rinse your glasses with water before cleaning. Because tiny particles can be abrasive when rubbed across the lens.

Clean lenses by using a lens spray or mild soap or a little dishwashing liquid, then rinse with water. Window detergent is not recommended as it may damage the lens’s coatings. Polycarbonate lenses are not resistant to chemicals such as acetone or methylated spirit. If your glasses are fitted with polycarbonate lenses, you should never use cleaning liquid that contains Acetone or methylated spirits to clean the lenses.

Always use a clean soft cloth to wipe the lens after rinsing or cleaning. Do not use worn clothing that may have embedded dirt or paper products to clean your spectacles as this can scratch your lenses.

Wearing and Handling:

Do not wear your glasses on top of your head, as this can weaken or crack the frames. Also it could affect the optical alignment of your spectacles resulting in impaired vision.

Take them off with two hands instead of one. This keeps the earpieces straight and in the right alignment.

Do not left glasses hung on the neck via a spectacle cord. While attaching a spectacle cord on the arms of the glasses can prevent glasses from falling to the ground in case of accident, glasses should not be left hung on the neck via a spectacle cord when the glasses are not in use. This is because that the lenses are subject to frequent impact and scratch when the glasses swing and hit the surrounding objects.

Always lay your glasses with lens surface face up on a steady surface to avoid scratch or inside a case when not in use.

Protection:

  • Keep your eyewear in a protective case when you’re not wearing them. If this is not possible, leave them open and upside down on a flat surface in a safe place.
  • Avoid placing your sunglasses without a case in your purse or pocket. Keys or combs can easily scratch them.
  • Don’t leave your sunglasses on the dashboard of your car. The intense heat that can occur inside a closed car on hot sunny days can damage lens coating and/ or frame hardware.
  • Always use both hands to remove your sunglasses. This will prevent the frame from becoming bent and curved.
  • Don’t wear sunglasses on the top of your head as it can stretch the frames.

Storage Accessories to Consider:

  • Always store your spectacle in their protective case and away from excessive heat ( e.g.. Not on car dashboard).
  • Protective Case: If your sunglasses don’t come with a hard or padded case, buy one. A case protects your eyewear from scratching and crushing, and helps keep the lenses clean.
  • Microfiber Cleaning Cloth: Keep one with your eyewear to ensure you are not tempted to use something less appropriate to hand.
  • Retaining Bands: These are a must for active sports.
  • Storage Clip: A visor-mounted clip for your car keeps your sunglasses safe and accessible when not in use.
  • Cord or Chain: If you’re in and out of the sun constantly, like a delivery driver, a cord is useful. It will avoid you having to put your sunglasses away all the time and also ensure you don’t leave them anywhere!
